Is the doctrine of the Trinity biblical? Is Jesus Christ God, just as the Father is God? How is it that there could be three persons within one God (or shall we say Godhead)? Do we have to believe in the Trinity in order to be saved? How are we to know and relate to a triune God, when the Trinity is said to be a mystery no one can understand? And with so many variations of Trinitarian theology, which one is closer to the truth? There are so many questions, yet seemingly few really good answers.
Perhaps you are among those of us who have found the doctrine of the Trinity to be very complicated, confusing, unknowable, and a theology to be considered only by the brilliant… Or perhaps you are among those who know a great deal on the matter, holding and defending the doctrine as the central core of our Christian faith. Whoever you are, I humbly suggest that in many ways this doctrine has been overstated and misused. I also submit to you that the identity of this One whom we call our triune God may in fact be found to be far more simplistic, knowable, logical, approachable, closer, and even more practical than some of us have made Him out to be.
I do not say these things lightly, nor do I desire to mislead you into thoughts of heresy. Over the past seven years I have stumbled upon some very fascinating, though relatively easy to understand discoveries which have freed my simple mind to know our God in ways I had never thought possible. The catch is, these ideas are considerably different than what some of us have traditionally held true… requiring us to loosen our grip on dogma and take a fresh look at Scripture if we are to grasp them (Mat 15:3-9).
With this said, I present my findings to you not as a pressured attempt of persuasion… rather as a next step in the further discovery and development of what has become a very fascinating and intriguing journey. To date I have kept these discoveries primarily to myself and those close to me. But now I submit some of these findings to you… for your benefit perhaps… but also to hear what our Father may want to speak into this great quandary through your reactions, responses, questions, and general comments. I have come to the belief that the greatest understanding of truth is not derived through solitude alone, but also through the mutual submission amongst Christ’s body… each of us coming together in genuine willingness to learn from one another and scripture, no matter how great our differences and variances in interpretation (Acts 15:1-35; Eph 4:1-16).
You may have realized this already, but my intentions are in no way to attempt answering all your questions on the doctrine of the Trinity in one summarized, well written web page. Rather that we may discover a more accurate understanding of the truth together… through further prayer, searching of the scriptures, humbling ourselves before God and one another, your comments and questions, and the writing of various articles and FAQ’s. Until then, may our God bless us in this journey… and please, feel free to contact me with any comments and/or questions you may have on the matter!
